The Internet Cafe Retirement Lifestyle

I'm writing this from Mexico during a short Christmas/New Year's break. We're into our second day on the vacation to Puerto Vallarta, or what I like to call our scouting mission for possible retirement locations.

What always impresses me the most is how willing to talk and share experiences, fellow travellers are. We joke that we're likely to meet someone from our home province first. It happened last year and it happened again this year sitting around the pool.

She told of us this excellent Internet Cafe they use just a few blocks from where we are staying, for keeping in touch with home. I'm here as we speak. A bank of computers, wireless access and a great coffee place. Calls home to Canada are about 6 cents a minute apparently using VOIP, I'm presuming, easily beating my .28 cent per minute calling home card.

My point is pretty basic today with the mind in vacation mode. Retirement living in the 21st century and working in retirement can be anywhere you want it to be as long as you can keep connected and feel connected. Scouting out an Internet Cafe (or Wifi hotspot) location that will serve your communication needs any time you want it will enhance the whole experience and at minimal cost to you.

I'm paying about 25 pesos (approximately $2.50 for 60 minutes of access time). Very affordable. No investment in equipment needed. All I brought with me is my SD and CF card reader and a couple of USB data storage devices.

What's your experience staying connected while travelling? The ability to do it makes your time away from home basis

Where have you found great Internet cafes or Hotspots? If they're too good to share, we'll understand, but otherwise let us know. If you want the name of the Internet cafe in Puerto Cafe, send me an email.
